“That’s incredible. Imagine seven million people all wanting to live together. Yeah, New York must be the friendliest place on earth.” – Mick Dundee, Crocodile Dundee
CBS news is reporting on an outrage, an absolute outrage at an Outback Steakhouse in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Apparently, a waitress was fired for wearing a Tea Party bracelet. Now, who knows if this was really the reason she was canned. I mean, times are tough and they may have fired this poor waitress as a part of normal layoffs. Or, perhaps they actually fired her because she was a conservative.
In times like these, it’s important to remember principles. Employment is not a right. It is an agreement between free people to provide services for pay. If either party decides the agreement is no longer acceptable, and they can terminate it without violating terms of the agreement, then they are free to do so … and they owe nobody an explanation.
It is ultimately destructive for a company to fire people for reasons unrelated to the business of the company. Hiring and firing based on race, creed, color, religion, gender, age, and all the rest is inefficient. But, people should be free to exercise inefficiency if they so choose – and the free market is free to respond to this inefficiency and choose a different business for patronage.
Did they fire this poor girl because she was a conservative? Maybe they did. But to respond with accusations and challenges and even lawsuits is the way of the liberal, not the conservative, and not the free man. No, the free man works hard, and is well worth his wages; and he faces such trials with frustrations with harder work still.
