“Higher taxes is the road to ruin. We must and we will shrink our government, and that means making some tough choices, tightening our belts.” – Chris Christie, Governor of New Jersey
Just yesterday I read an article that Chris Christie vetoed a spending bill that contained funding for Planned Parenthood. Democrats attempted to override the veto, but could not gain enough Republican backing. As a consequence, at least one Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in New Jersey is closing its doors. Praise God!
I need to do a bit more digging, but unless I find something untoward (which I doubt), I’m endorsing Chris Christie for President in 2012. (He hasn’t indicated that he plans to run, in fact, he has tentatively indicated the opposite – but we may be able to draft him.)
Chris Christie on abortion: “I am pro-life. Hearing the strong heartbeat of my unborn daughter 14 years ago at 13 weeks gestation had a profound effect on me and my beliefs. The life of every human being is precious. We must work to reduce abortions in New Jersey through laws such as parental notification, a 24-hour waiting period and a ban on partial-birth abortion.”
Even if he weren’t pro-life, ending public funding for abortion clinics is a must. There should be no publicly funded abortions!
Now, pro-choicers will argue that Planned Parenthood does not perform abortions with public funding. Perhaps not (though I suspect they do), but they build all the necessary implements and structures for it with public funding, pay staffers with public funding, advertise with public funding. This argument is akin to claiming that the U.S. military could build all the tanks, guns, and planes it wants and pay soldiers’ salaries with government funding – but if they got private donations for all the bullets and bombs then the U.S. government had not actually funded killing anybody in battle. Nonsense.
More generally though, this move represents just what America needs, as we noted in the title. We need to break the current system of government handouts and kickbacks. We need to stop government funding of a whole lot of different programs. It is not the government’s role to ensure that this industry or that succeeds – they will succeed on their own merits. If Planned Parenthood cannot keep the doors open without a subsidy then they need to close the doors; the free market has spoken and indicated that they do not provide a service that is economically efficient.
Chris Christie has also taken on the public unions, whose benefits packages are bankrupting New Jersey and quite a few other states. We need a president willing to take on all public unions. They have reversed rolls with us. It should be the case that our government works to provide services for the lowest possible price. That is how we each handle our own finances, and how we should expect our government to behave. Instead we have a government that treats the people as pseudo-slaves, here to work for the funding of government largess. They use our hard work to ply over-wrought benefits to government employees – in exchange for a guaranteed vote. This is backwards.
So carry on Chris Christie – we’re with you. You are setting an example of what our government needs to be, and we hope that America quickly changes course to follow your lead.
